Life's a bore.
As evident from my obvious lack of enthusiasm to update my blog, I've been taking a hiatus. And, it's not so much from updating my blog, per se, but rather from the platitudes of life.
At first, I thought that my holiday back home could be exactly what the doctor ordered to save me from my routine-ish life in Hobart. I mean, isn't this what all overseas uni students in Hobart would wish for? Two months away from the cold weather and almost-lifeless city to spending quality time with family and friends under the warmth of the tropical sun and sipping on your favourite drink underneath swaying palm trees. Who could ask for more, right?
WRONG.
Allow me to put forward the postulate that life is one big bore, dotted with morsels of excitement.
Some say that life's a rollercoaster ride. But, what comes to mind when you mention 'rollercoasters'? I think of fast-moving coaches, racing against the wind and adrenaline-pumped people screaming their heads off in excitement. So, would you say that life's a constant stream of excitement? No, I don't think so.
I am of the opinion that familiarity leads to boredom. Anything which is familiar, no matter how exciting, can be a bore. Think about it. Try to recall the most exciting thing that happened to you. Take that, and imagine that it happens to you again, and again and again... Not as exciting anymore, is it?
But then again, who's complaining anyway? Who am I, a 20 year old guy who has an entire lifetime ahead of him, to complain? There are those people who have been working the same job, in the same company, in the same place for the past 40 years and you don't see them blogging about their discontent. Just ask the old Char Koay Teow or Mee Goreng hawker at the corner of a busy intersection in George Town.
I'm not suggesting that every moment of life SHOULD be exciting to keep us at the edge of our seats. Staying on a rollercoaster ride for too long can sure make one vomit. My point is this. We should cherish every moment of our lives to the best that we can - not so much latching on to that ONE moment in life, but, instead enjoying it to the fullest and then moving on from there before you get so engrossed in it that you can't let go because that's when routine, familiarity and boredom kicks in.
Besides, having ONE exciting event happen in life is better than not having any at all. Life's like Love, in a way. It's better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all.
